Background:Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is one of the most common sensory impairments among older adults and is associated with impaired communication, social isolation, depression, and reduced quality of life (QoL). Early identification of hearing handicap is essential for timely intervention and rehabilitation to improve functional independence and overall well-being. Objectives:The primary objective of this study was to assess the impact of hearing loss on quality of life among elderly individuals using the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening (HHIE-S) questionnaire. The secondary objective was todetermine the proportion of elderly individuals experiencing a perceived hearing handicap. Materials and Methods:A hospital-based cross-sectional observational study was conducted over a period of six months among 100 elderly individuals aged 60 years and above attending the ENT and Geriatric Outpatient Departments. Participants with severe cognitive impairment, recent ear surgery, or current hearing aid use were excluded. Data were collected using the validated Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening (HHIE-S) questionnaire. HHIE-S scores were categorized as no handicap (0–8), mild-to-moderate handicap (10–24), and significant handicap (26–40). Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics, with a p-value of <0.05 considered statistically significant. Results:Among the 100 participants, 42% had no perceived hearing handicap, 34% had mild-to-moderate hearing handicap, and 24% had significant hearing handicap. The severity of hearing handicap increased with advancing age, with participants aged over 80 years demonstrating the highest mean HHIE-S scores. Hearing loss was associated with reduced social interaction, emotional distress, and diminished quality of life, indicating a substantial psychosocial impact among the elderly population. Conclusion:Hearing loss has a significant negative impact on the quality of life of elderly individuals, particularly affecting their social and emotional well-being. The HHIE-S questionnaire is an effective screening tool for identifying perceived hearing handicap in older adults. Future Compound Heat-Flash Drought Events Amplify Socioeconomic Exposure and Human Displacement Risks across East Africa

East Africa faces an escalating climate crisis driven by the amplification of compound heat-flash drought (CHFD) events. This study quantifies future CHFD dynamics, socioeconomic exposure, agricultural impacts, and human displacement risks across East Africa under moderate (SSP2-4.5) and high-emissions (SSP5-8.5) scenarios. Using a weighted multi-model ensemble from CMIP6 projections, we analyze historical (1981–2010) and future (2021–2100) periods, integrating population density data, agricultural statistics, and displacement modeling frameworks. Under SSP5-8.5, moderate CHFD frequency is projected to double, while severe events increase by 60% by 2100. Population exposure increases by up to 60% in southern Tanzania and 40–55% in northeastern Kenya, southern Somalia, and eastern Ethiopia. Compound drought-heatwave exposure is linked to 27% (±4.2%) reductions in harvested area and 35% (±5.1%) reductions in crop production, with maize and sorghum most severely affected (β = −0.47 to −0.53, p < 0.01). Rain-fed systems suffer losses exceeding 30%, while irrigated systems demonstrate resilience with losses below 10%. Climate change, accounting for 57.4–71.2% of exposure changes, is the primary driver, with population growth contributing 18.5–26.8%. Climate change could force 6.9–10.1 million people in East Africa to move internally by 2050. These findings demand urgent emission reductions, as mitigation is the most effective strategy for reducing future risks. Adaptation priorities include climate-resilient crops, irrigation expansion, improved flash drought early warning systems, social protection for vulnerable populations, and migration governance frameworks. Region-specific strategies are essential given East Africa's heterogeneous climate responses.

Future energy systems with up to 100 % integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) will require new approaches to ensure system stability. As renewable penetration increases, energy systems become more sus- ceptible to critical situations such as extreme weather events, congestion, local voltage problems, or (cyber) attacks, and operators often have only seconds, not minutes, to react before consequences become uncontain- able. ProRES (Proactive Resilience for Increased Energy System Flexibility and Stability) addresses this by combining reactive measures with proactive ones that prepare the system before a disruptive event occurs, along three main objectives: improving the prediction of disruptive and extreme events through better state estimation, event detection, and fault localization; developing decision-support methods for handling and miti- gating disruptive events once they occur, combining Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based graceful degradation with the parallel execution of what-if scenarios; and enabling operators and AI applications to learn from previous events through a cyber-physical digital twin used both for training and for compliance testing of digital appli- cations. The resulting solutions are validated at increasing technology readiness levels using AIT’s SmartEST lab and the real distribution grids of the partnering Distribution System Operators (DSOs) IKB and ÖKE.
This document identifies and consolidates the use cases and requirements that a proactive resilience solution needs to address. It follows a gap-analysis-based methodology adapted from the predecessor project RESili8, in which all consortium partners contributed individual use cases, drawn from the project proposal and refined and extended during this analysis. These collected use cases, more than 30 in total, are documented in full in an appendix and are consolidated, together with the relevant state-of-the-art baseline, into 14 core use cases. Eight of these ground the prediction of disruptive and extreme events and the protection of the grid’s mea- surement and control layer: real-time state estimation, network topology estimation, fault localization, optimal sensor placement, load flow with uncertainties, optimal grid configuration, anomaly detection for International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 104, and inverter control. Three address the handling and mitigation of disruptive events once they occur: agent-based graceful degradation, the AI training pipeline that supports it, and the parallel execution of what-if scenarios. The remaining three, cyber-physical digital twins, the cyber- physical range, and compliance testing, target learning, training, and compliance testing based on past events.
Alongside these core use cases, this document catalogues the development and validation resources that the con- sortium partners make available for realizing them: measurement data such as disturbance and power-quality recordings, Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and grid topology data, and smart metering; simulation models and software, including agent-training and co-simulation frameworks; and laboratory and field infrastructure spanning the partnering DSOs’ networks.
Together, the core use cases and available resources define the scope and constraints within which the resulting tools need to be developed, and form the basis for the next step of the project, in which this baseline and gap analysis will be turned into a concrete concept and transformation roadmap for the proactive resilience solution tools.

Socio-Economic Vulnerability and Empowerment of Women Tea-Garden Workers in Assam: An Analysis of Wages, Living Conditions, Social Security, and Decision-Making Autonomy

Assam has women tea plantation workers, but inadequate basic services and low earnings lead to fragmentation of employment and limit women’s voice and choices in both family and work. Women’s socio-economic vulnerability in tea estates and the connection to empowerment are at the forefront through the lens of wage levels, the regularity of employment, living conditions, social and financial inclusion, and decision-making power. This study undertakes a critical analysis of authenticated literature in the domain along with official reports for a time period of 2020–2025. In addition, for statistical representation, a transparently declared simulated dataset of 300 women workers is constructed. A seven-dimensional Socio-Economic Vulnerability Index and a seven-dimensional Women Workers’ Empowerment Index were developed. Among other things, diverse statistical analyses of the dataset were undertaken. The simulated results demonstrated a clear divide between permanent and temporary workers. Permanent workers earned significantly higher and had greater access to maternity and health benefits, while temporary workers had more irregular paid days and offered weaker paid-day protections. The simulated results showed that the mean vulnerability score was 0.337 and the mean empowerment score was 0.566. Longer hours of unpaid care were negatively associated with empowerment, while empowerment of women workers improved with education, personal income, union membership, social protection, and bank ownership. Social protection reduced vulnerability. The results of the study are hypothetical analyses rather than field estimates, but they demonstrate the value of an integrated empirical approach in identifying intersecting disadvantages. Effective policy includes transparent systems for wage determination, universal and portable social protection, housing and occupational safety standards, functional childcare, women-controlled financial inclusion and institutional mechanisms that enable women’s agency and participation so that women transition from having nominal representation in an institution to having substantive power to make decisions.

This paper presents a rigorous theoretical framework for indirectly reconstructing latent quantum photon states through the analysis of secondary environmental perturbations, termed topological bow waves, induced within a surrounding topological medium. Building upon foundational principles from quantum state tomography and environment-assisted measurement, this approach leverages the environment not as a source of noise but as an active, information-preserving witness to photon interactions. By integrating topological invariants such as Chern numbers and Berry curvature into a multi-witness joint optimization model, the framework enhances state identifiability and suppresses measurement degeneracy. Employing coupled transformation cascades and advanced probabilistic inference methods, including iterative gradient descent and Bayesian fusion, the model enables reconstruction of photon properties—such as number, polarization, frequency, and path—without direct photon absorption or collapse of the quantum state. This work extends prior conceptual tools in photon pulse reconstruction toward a controlled, mathematically rigorous methodology for observing otherwise inaccessible quantum information encoded in environmental responses, opening new avenues for quantum forensics and topological quantum photonics
