Technical Trading Rules for Pakistan Stock Exchange

The efficient market hypothesis (EMH) suggests that a stock market behaves like a random walk which means that developing profitable trading rules and forecasting the trends would be impossible. However, quantitative traders examine the short-term behavior of the market using technical analysis to build the rules. Such rules control the buying and selling decisions of stocks and thus increase profit margin. Due to progress in computational intelligence, hybrid approaches based on machine learning, and technical analysis, the profit margin has increased from the traditional buy and hold approach. Technical analysis combines different technical indicators( such as Relative Strength Index, etc) and determines the timings of the investment. Combining different indicators and tweaking their parameters can change the trading rules and thus the profitability of the strategy. However, it is computationally expensive to try all the possible permutations of these indications. In this paper, we use genetic programming (GP) for this purpose to explore the search space and evolve trading rules capable of generating profits over unseen data. A walk forward validation is used instead of a traditional train-test split. The proposed method is tested on 8 different stocks listed on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). Our results show that trading rules generated by our approach outperform than buy and hold approach.

For the Future of Smart Cars

Recently we have been involved in developing controllers for simulated racing cars. Our work was published at a renowned conference. The controllers we propose were derived using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Our work is a forerunner in the niche of driverless cars that we aim to undertake in the future.

Beer Review

Not a long time ago, a friend of ours took us to a local pub to talk about some of the algorithms we use in our work. Another friend set up the paraphernalia for the presentation. Yet another friend was thinking about creative ways to name our meet-up. Some of the ideas he had were to call it a beer review, or a pub-location. Hence we call this a beer review. Human Development and Economic Growth

The development of its people is one of the principal objectives of an economy. To the ambit that greater capabilities and opportunities will improve the productivity of people, human development is also expected to have a positive influence on economic growth. The primary objective of this paper is to empirically examine whether human development significantly affects economic growth. We use panel data consisting of 25 developed and 25 developing countries from the year 2000 to 2014. The data has been collected from Human Development Report (UNDP) and World Development Indicators (World Bank). Ordinary least squares, fixed effects, and random effects models have been employed for the examination. One set of the equations uses HDI as an aggregated measure of human development. The second set uses health and education as dis-aggregated measures of human development to assess their separate effects on growth. A significantly positive relationship between HDI and economic growth can be found in the cases of both developed and developing economies. Life expectancy and primary gross enrollment ratio used as measures of health and education, respectively, impact economic growth negatively.

Neuroscience of Belief

Much of the degeneration of the human condition is attributed to religion. As we move in the midst of the twenty-first century, enjoying the cornucopia lent by technological and scientific advancements, one thing that is being widely believed to retard us is religion. For one thing, it is systematically preached that religion pollutes the human mind. There are a whole lot of neuroscientists who are hellbent on proving that religious belief is a mental illness. In this paper, we study the neural correlates of Islamic religious beliefs. We exposed a handful of subjects to true and false statements concerning Islamic religious belief. Alongside that, we expose our subjects to true and false statements about ordinary secular beliefs. In the interim, we record their brain activity to analyze the neural correlates of various types of beliefs. Through this comparative analysis, our hope is to quantify whether religion really is responsible for any atrophy of the human mind.

On the Experience of Wrapping Beagle Puppy for Octave

Open Beagle is a well-known framework for evolutionary computing. A miniature version of it is Beagle Puppy. Puppy is basically genetic programming (GP) software. Moreover, given its small code, it is suitable for learning about the implementation of a typical GP system. Both Open Beagle and Beagle Puppy are written in C++. In the past, we implemented Puppy in Java. In this paper, we report our work about wrapping Beagle puppy for Octave. Octave is a high-level numerical computing environment that is particularly suitable for scientific research. In wrapping Puppy for Octave, our hope was to retain the computational efficiency of Java, while making the aforementioned GP system more user-friendly.

We remember we wrote quite a lot about grammatical evolution. The last time we mentioned it, we said that grammatical evolution goes to Mathworks. We did not toot our horn much about it since then. We were busy in benchmarking this tool and we have been writing about it. We even renamed it to GELAB, as it is implemented in Matlab. A good thing that has happened recently is that GELAB is not published work. Yes, it is now available in lecture notes on artificial intelligence with Springer Verlag. Reiterated, having a tool so strong as GE in an extremely user-friendly environment such as Matlab has its own benefits. For one thing, it makes innovation easier.
